The BYU Cougars and the Utah Utes have scheduled a home-and-home football series for 2017 and 2018, the two schools announced this afternoon. The Cougars will travel to Hawaii for their final game of the season on Saturday, Nov. 25. Coming into the game, the plan was for BYU to use the passing to take advantage of heavy pressure coming from the UMass defense, according to head coach Kalani Sitake. The Cougars’ had gone down early several times in previous matches, motivating coach Rockwood to write, “Just focus on the first 45 minutes” on the whiteboard in the team’s pregame meeting.
SMU has scored 27 or more in every game but two and is 6-0 when it gets past 34. The two in-state rivals also have a contract to meet on Sept. 21, 2013 at BYU and Sept. 10, 2016 at Utah. Due to Utah scheduling a home-and-home series with Michigan, the “Holy War” will not be played in 2014 or 2015, marking the first interruption in the series since 1942. BYU will host the first game of the series at LaVell Edwards Stadium in Provo on Sept. 9, 2017.

The Cougars need to win two of their final three games, including road trips to Boise State and Stanford, to even be eligible. As the No. 3 seed in the WCC tournament, they defeated San Diego in the quarterfinals and Saint Mary's in the semifinals before losing to Gonzaga in the championship game. On the other side, time of possession is relatively meaningless because of how quick SMU the passing game works.
There’s a big problem with that – you have to beat BYU on the ground. SMU might have a big-time offense that scores in bunches and takes teams out of their gameplans, but BYU should be able to get that big offensive line going right away and get physical. The New Mexico Bowl has normally been a home for a Mountain West team,but BYU ended up being the fit. The Mountain West won the last four and seven of the last nine, and none of games were particularly amazing. Last year’s Fresno State win over UTEP was okay, but there hasn’t been a ton of scoring since Colorado State’s win over Washington State in 2013. Utah now has two non-conference games set for 2017 and one for 2018.
The Utes are slated to open the 2017 season at home against North Dakota. The completion of this series gives the BYU Cougars seven scheduled games in 2017 and five in 2018. In 2017, BYU is set to host Wisconsin, Utah, California, Boise State and San Jose State and travel to Fresno State and East Carolina.
BYU's roster will feature four missionaries for the new season. First up is Zac Seljaas who returns after coming home early for a shoulder injury. This brought the game within one touchdown for the Cougars, but a failed onside kick attempt sealed their fate. Unfortunately, they were not able to execute the gameplan or withstand the pressure on the line, with Critchlow getting sacked seven times.
The Cougars held on to defeat Kansas 3-2 on Monday for the team’s second win of the season. "If anything, this has just brought us closer as a team," said Batty, who had two tackles and a tackle for loss Friday. "We've got a good group of dudes, and there's not a single quitter in our locker room." "Struggles and adversity are a tough thing, but I'm proud of our players and how hard they played. We were unable to get the win, but I love these guys and I love their attitudes. BYU apologized for the incident and Richardson said the school's volleyball players reached out to her in support. The defense hasn’t been bad, but the team is 1-5 when allowing 27 points or more and 6-0 when it doesn’t.
